FEATURED PROGRAM

The Home Program

The Home Program provides mental health services, individual and family counseling, mentoring, and cultural activities for refugee children and their families in St. Louis, MO.

Program staff use group-focused, community-oriented approaches reflecting specific beliefs, customs, and practices from their refugee clients’ cultures.

The Home Program works to help refugees re-establish a sense of community, to feel more self-reliant and capable, and to enhance their capacity to be in charge of their own lives. Staff act as “cultural brokers,” aiming to help refugees cope with unfamiliar and often confusing requirements of social services and school systems, helping them adjust to the ins and outs of a new culture and different language.

JULY/AUGUST 2003 SPOTLIGHT

SUDANESE YOUTH

About 3,700 Sudanese youth and young adults (popularly known as “The Lost Boys,” though some were girls) resettled in the United States between October 2000 and September 2001. This month, BRYCS spotlights the importance of helping such youth maintain connections with each other in the United States, and of assisting their attempts to reconnect with family and friends left behind.

Findings will be released soon of a report on health outcomes of Sudanese youth in the U.S. refugee foster care system.

For additional resources on these topics, see BRYCS’ featured searches on Sudanese youth and on health.
