FEATURED PROGRAM

S.O.U.L.

The Summer Of Understanding and Learning (S.O.U.L.) program is a hands-on, educational summer program offered by the Georgia Mutual Assistance Association Consortium (GMAAC) in Atlanta, GA.

S.O.U.L. seeks to provide refugee children of more than a dozen ethnicities, in kindergarten through high school, with eight weeks of intellectually stimulating, intensive, and fulfilling education and fun. Staff and local volunteers work with a themed curriculum developed for S.O.U.L. each year by participating Americorps VISTA volunteers.

This free program focuses on topics like cultural awareness, team building, and fostering cross-cultural friendships. It includes field trips and inspiring guest speakers.

Over a hundred children and youth take part each summer.

JUNE 2003 SPOTLIGHT

Sharing the Future
CELEBRATE WORLD REFUGEE DAY

This World Refugee Day, June 20, 2003, is dedicated to refugee youth. Over ten million refugees around the world are youth or children, as are more than a third of refugees entering the United States.

World Refugee Day reminds service providers to celebrate the strengths, cultures and unique contributions of refugees. Refugee youth share their strengths every day: in schools, in play, and in friendships. Through sharing, the future becomes possible.

Sharing and supporting refugee youths’ cultures, languages, ethnicities, and religions are important, both for the youths’ development and as an investment in our communities. Click here for resource ideas.
