The Importance of Cultural Competency
Despite the similarities people share, there are fundamental differences that arise from nationality,
ethnicity, culture, family background, and individual experiences.
These differences affect the beliefs, practices, and behavior of both
the refugee client and service provider, and also influence the
expectations that client and provider have of each other. Lack
of awareness about cultural differences can make it difficult for both
providers and clients to achieve the best, most appropriate services.
This month's
BRYCS Spotlight discusses the
critical issue that service providers have in addressing cultural competence. For
additional resources on this topic, see this month's BRYCS’
featured
search on
cultural competence.
BRYCS will continue to update the
cultural competency resource listing as new materials are acquired, reviewed, and
included. Please join us in making this possible by suggesting
relevant resources. Click on the “Suggest a Resource” link on the
BRYCS homepage, or call toll-free 1-888-572-6500—press #3 after the
prompt. Or send an e-mail to Outreach & Information Coordinator
