BRYCS GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE
TO
FOSTER LOCAL SERVICE COLLABORATION

BRYCS has launched a mini-grant initiative to help local sites develop and implement cross-service trainings.

Through this initiative we are encouraging refugee-serving agencies and public child welfare to increase collaboration, resource-sharing, and strategies for meeting the needs of refugee youth, children, and their families.

BRYCS will select lead agencies in six sites for a $3,000 mini-grant to implement a cross-service training in their service areas. To guide the planning process, each site will receive a copy of Building Bridges: A Cross-Service Training Guide, and BRYCS staff will be available to provide consultation and resources.

Deadline for applications is March 17, 2004.

For more information about the mini-grant and the application, click HERE.

For more information about previous BRYCS cross-service trainings, go to the Publications page and read the Newsletter on Cross-Service Training, Cross-Service Training Reports for Atlanta and St. Louis.

The Importance of Cultural Competency

Despite the similarities people share, there are fundamental differences that arise from nationality, ethnicity, culture, family background, and individual experiences.  These differences affect the beliefs, practices, and behavior of both the refugee client and  service provider, and also influence the expectations that client and provider have of each other. Lack of awareness about cultural differences can make it difficult for both providers and clients to achieve the best, most appropriate services.

This month's BRYCS Spotlight discusses the critical issue that service providers have in addressing cultural competence.  For additional resources on this topic, see this month's BRYCS’ featured search on cultural competence.

BRYCS will continue to update the cultural competency resource listing as new materials are acquired, reviewed, and included. Please join us in making this possible by suggesting relevant resources. Click on the “Suggest a Resource” link on the BRYCS homepage, or call toll-free 1-888-572-6500—press #3 after the prompt. Or send an e-mail to Outreach & Information Coordinator Charles Evans at clearinghouse@brycs.org.

Last month's featured search on parenting is available in the ARCHIVE, along with other past featured searches, monthly spotlights, and featured programs.

NEW IN BRYCS
Refugee and Immigrant Parent Services Listserv

BRYCS offers a new moderated email discussion group focused on service provision to refugees and immigrant parents, intended for service providers who work directly with these populations.

Currently, ten agencies participate. If you are interested in communicating and exchanging information with other service providers across the U.S. about service provision to refugee and immigrant parents, send an e-mail to ta@brycs.org, saying you want to join the "Parent Services" listserv.
