FEATURED PROGRAM

Expressive Arts Program

The Expressive Arts
Program of Catholic Charities Health and Human Services/Migration and Refugee Services in Cleveland, OH, seeks to help refugee children and women address mental health needs through art, music, and dance therapies.

In individual and group sessions, the program supports refugees–including those with limited English skills–to express feelings about trauma and adjustment; it also works to empower them. Staff measure program success through participation rates, feedback, and clinical observation.

MAY 2003 SPOTLIGHT

MAY IS NATIONAL
FOSTER CARE MONTH

Personal tragedies – such as abuse, neglect, family breakdown, the death of caregivers – exist whenever a child enters foster care. Such tragedies may affect refugee children who resettle in the U.S. with parents or other caregivers.

Some refugee children, separated from parents or customary caregivers while still overseas, are resettled in the U.S. into a specialized refugee foster care system. Under certain conditions, other children may be able to receive special refugee foster care services.

BRYCS is addressing the needs of refugee children in public foster care by developing promising practice materials and hosting a Refugees and Foster Care Roundtable.
